Cultural fragmentation

  • Lack of cultural integration
  • Cultural differentiation

Nature

Lack of cultural integration is the disharmony between cultural heritage and national identity. It is almost impossible to integrate different cultures into the national unit without a loss of cultural heritage, yet where cultural heritage remains completely intact there is division and social conflict. So far there seems to have been little success in finding a happy medium between assimilation and separatism.

Claim

  1. We must also add the differences of culture and value systems between the various population groups, differences which do not always match the degree of economic development, but which help to create distances. These are elements and aspects which render the social question much more complex, precisely because this question has assumed a universal dimension. (Papal Encyclical, Sollicitudo Rei Socialis, 30 December 1987).
