Exploitation
- Dependence on exploitation

Nature
Exploitation is the process, condition or result of an individual, group or institution taking unfair advantage of another usually through coercion, deception or undue influence for their own ends. In ecology, it means the use of raw materials excessively without considering the long term ecological impacts of such use.
Incidence
The International Labour Organization estimated in 2021 that 27.6 million people worldwide were victims of forced labor, a severe form of exploitation, with the highest prevalence in Asia and the Pacific. Exploitation also manifests in wage theft, unsafe working conditions, and unfair contracts, affecting both formal and informal sectors globally. Migrant workers, women, and children are particularly vulnerable, with exploitation reported in agriculture, construction, domestic work, and manufacturing industries.
In 2013, the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka, Bangladesh, exposed the exploitation of garment workers, who endured hazardous conditions and meager wages. Over 1,100 workers died, highlighting systemic labor abuses in global supply chains.

Claim
Exploitation is a pervasive and insidious problem that undermines human dignity and perpetuates inequality. It manifests in various forms—labor exploitation, human trafficking, and systemic oppression—affecting millions worldwide. This moral outrage demands urgent attention and action. By turning a blind eye, we condone suffering and injustice. We must confront exploitation head-on, advocating for the vulnerable and holding perpetrators accountable. Only through collective awareness and action can we dismantle these oppressive systems and foster a more equitable society.
Counter-claim
Exploitation is often exaggerated, overshadowing more pressing issues like poverty and education. Many individuals willingly engage in transactions that benefit them, and labeling these as exploitation undermines personal agency. The focus should be on empowering people to make informed choices rather than perpetuating a victim mentality. By overstating exploitation, we divert attention from real solutions and hinder progress. Let’s prioritize genuine problems instead of sensationalizing a concept that often lacks nuance.
