Global modelling

Description

Constructing and developing models of global phenomena based on mathematical and computer-assisted simulations. The purpose of such models is to obtain an insight into the structure and function of complex, dynamic, global systems in order to predict their behaviour by analogy with the behaviour of the models. The emphasis of a model may be placed on economic, social, political, technological, military or other aspects, or may interrelate some or all of these.

Context

The importance of world modelling emerged in the 1960s, when advances in systems analysis, computing and global data collection made it possible to represent interactions among population, resources, production and environmental change. Its significance was publicly highlighted by the Club of Rome’s *Limits to Growth* (1972), whose computer simulations helped establish modelling as a tool for examining global futures. Subsequent work has emphasized model comparison, uncertainty, feedbacks and the need to integrate social, economic and ecological dynamics.

Claim

World modelling is a critically important strategy, not an optional intellectual exercise. By building structured representations of how systems, people, and environments interact, we can anticipate consequences, test decisions, and act with far greater confidence. It exposes hidden assumptions, reveals leverage points, and reduces costly mistakes. Any organization serious about solving complex problems should invest in world modelling; refusing to do so is reckless, short-sighted, and strategically irresponsible.

Counter-claim

World modelling is vastly overrated and should not be treated as an important strategy. It encourages abstract speculation, bloated assumptions, and elaborate forecasts that rarely survive contact with reality. Organizations would be better served by addressing concrete problems, testing immediate solutions, and adapting quickly to evidence. Time spent constructing grand models is too often time wasted—an intellectual distraction masquerading as practical wisdom.
