Perpetuating environmental cycles involves maintaining or restoring natural processes that continuously regenerate ecosystems and their resources. It focuses on closing material and energy loops through conservation, reuse, recycling, ecological restoration, renewable resource management, and reduction of pollution and waste. The strategy addresses resource depletion, ecosystem degradation, climate impacts, and loss of biodiversity by ensuring that environmental functions and productive capacities are sustained across generations.

Context

Recognition of perpetuating environmental cycles emerged with nineteenth-century studies of biogeochemical processes, particularly the circulation of carbon, nitrogen and water through living systems and geological reservoirs. During the twentieth century, ecosystem ecology and global Earth-system research showed that human activities could redirect or intensify these cycles across continents and oceans. By the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, attention increasingly focused on feedbacks, thresholds and the persistence of altered cycles under climate change, pollution and resource extraction.
