Supporting biosystematic capability
- Assisting taxonomic biology
- Promoting phologenetic science
- Valuing systematic biology
- Helping taxonomic studies
Description
Supporting biosystematic capability involves strengthening the scientific and technical capacity to identify, classify, and document biological diversity. This strategy ensures accurate species identification, underpins effective conservation, and informs sustainable resource management. Essential actions include training taxonomists, developing reference collections, improving data-sharing systems, and supporting research infrastructure. By remedying gaps in taxonomic knowledge and expertise, this approach addresses challenges in biodiversity assessment, invasive species control, and the implementation of international environmental agreements.
Implementation
BioNET International establishes and sustains biosystematic capabilities in developing country institutions to support national programmes for cost-effective sustainable agricultural development and the conservation and wise use of the environment and biodiversity through the creation of technical cooperation networks known as LOOPS (an acronym for locally organized and operated partnerships). Priority activities for the early years are: (a) information and communication services; (b) training; (c) rehabilitation of collections and establishment of new resources; (d) development and application of new technologies.
