Researching forests

  • Examining forestry issues
  • Compiling forestry statistics
  • Maintaining forest inventories

Context

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

Agenda 21 recommends:

(a) increasing the protection of forests from pollutants, fire, pests and diseases and other human-made interferences such as forest poaching, mining and unmitigated shifting cultivation, and the uncontrolled introduction of exotic plant and animal species;

(b) strengthening and/or establishing appropriate measures to assess and/or check inter-border movement of plants and related materials;

(c) developing, intensifying and accelerating research to improve knowledge and understanding of problems and natural mechanisms related to the management, regeneration and rehabilitation of all types of forest, including research on fauna and their interrelation with forests.
