Reducing demand for tobacco consumption

Implementation

The World Bank has adopted a policy of providing no new loans for tobacco growing or manufacturing projects. The World Health Organization coordinates multisectoral collaboration amongst United Nations agencies, notably to promote agricultural diversification to assist economies where tobacco is a major export.

Claim

  1. The UN recognizes that the serious health consequences of tobacco use cannot be tackled effectively without appropriate strategies for demand reduction.

Counter claim

  1. Cultural practices and customs relating to the use of tobacco should be taken into account in developing multisectoral approaches to the tobacco-related health issues. Reduction of demand is of great concern to tobacco producing countries, notably in the case of developing countries dependent on such revenues.
