Assessing costs and financing to combat poverty

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.

Direct costing of the array of activities envisaged in Agenda 21 is not possible, since specific activities would be designed to respond to the specific conditions prevailing in each case/country. However, indirect costing points to an estimate of very roughly US$ 30,000 million, of which approximately US$ 15,000 million would be provided through external assistance if this effort were to be shared equally by recipients and donors.
