Unauthorized proximity of males to females

  • Socializing between unrelated men and women
  • Khalwat

Incidence

Traditionally in many western societies, but to a far more limited degree at present, socializing between unmarried males and females could only occur under the supervision of a chaperon. Whilst decreasingly subject to any form of control, the activities of an unmarried man and woman behind closed doors continue to be viewed as extremely suspect, especially in Latin countries. Islamic law prohibits fraternizing between men and women, such as unmarried men and women walking together or holding hands.

Claim

  1. It is a well known fact that putting men and women in the same room is like mixing benzene and fire (Jordanian member of parliament).
