Lack of reliance on intuition

  • Inadequate use of creativity in management
  • Overemphasis on rationality in business

Nature

An intuitive grasp of continually evolving situations is essential for survival in today's business world. Too few managers realise that the creativity required to succeed in business today seldom results from convergent, analytical thinking; it is more the result of divergent thinking and highly intuitive approaches.

Background

Prior to the 1980s, managers resorted to intuition because of inadequate data. Since then, with the proliferation of computers, so much information is available that the use of intuition is essential in order to make sense of it quickly. Conventional mental activities such as absorption of information, retention and reasoning, have become inadequate.
