Decline of architecture

  • Trivialization of design of public buildings

Nature

Few architects now have a direct responsibility to the person or organization who finances a new building. The main contract is with the builder, who includes the building design in the price. This means that an architect may have little more responsibility than to adjust the façade.

Claim

  1. Architecture is becoming a two-tier business. At one end there will be a handful of stars producing signature buildings. At the other end there will be a broad mass of competing organizations putting up the vast mass of totally undistinguished buildings simply on the basis of price, without any consideration of design quality or long-term performance.
