Social and hierarchical position

This class of symbols employs people's positions in the social, economic and other orders. Included are such symbols as the court series of king, queen, prince, princess, counsellor, leader of knights (duke, baron, count, etc), individual sir knights, ambassador or other diplomat, bishop or court priest, herald, guard, jester, gaoler, executioner, court physician, wizard and other posts. In the order or estate of the churches, symbolism may utilize the principal offices, archbishop, Pope, etc, or any lesser offices down to deacons, sextons, etc. Titles of parliamentary or democratic government may be used symbolically such as minister, president, governor, mayor; and military ranks may also be used such as commander, admiral, field marshal, general, or soldier. A popular series of symbols derives from the craft unions which provide apprentice, journeyman, master. High society, on the other hand, gives the figures of the debutante, the matron and the grand dame among the ladies, and among the men, the gentlemen, the 'amateur', and sometimes, the playboy.

The military, rank and file, is applied symbolically to members in civil organizations. The royal titles may be applied symbolically to anyone preeminent, or as a general superlative. A debutante represents the novice; the master indicates the complete combination of theoretical knowledge and practical skill.
