Synchronization

Just as, in physics, a dominant vibration will entrain weaker vibrations so that they oscillate at the frequency of the stronger, so a strong vibration or musical impulse will affect the physiological and neurological rhythms of the body so that not only the physical condition of the individual is influenced but also the mind and the spirit. This is why music is so powerful in influencing the emotions and has even been known to give rise to enhanced states of consciousness and out-of-body experience. It may also explain the apparent affect of different types of music on health and growth rate of animals and plants.

This principle is used in music therapy, where music is used to alter such factors as pulse rate, blood pressure and brainwave activity. It may assist in diminishing pain and can thus lessen the amount of anaesthetic or medication required.
