Using synthetic pesticides with care
- Limiting use of chemical pesticides
- Protecting against pesticides
Description
Context
Uninformed and incorrect pesticide management and use are key environmental problems. Reports abound of farm workers at extreme risk due to lack of proper training in pesticide handling and inadequate or poorly functioning equipment and protective clothing. Other problems include excessive use of pesticides, improper timing of applications, poor enforcement of existing regulations, and failure to introduce and integrate non-chemical alternatives for pest control.
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
The Zonta International Foundation, UNIFEM, the International Organization of Consumers Unions, and the Pesticide Action Network are supporting a project in nine Asian countries to train women in safer pesticide handling.
