Subsistence farming

  • Very-small scale farming
  • Non-profit family farming

Description

Raising only sufficient food to feed one's family and have seeds for the following season as a way of maintaining independence and sustaining a rural economy.

Counter claim

  1. Subsistence farming keeps people tied to small plots of land, without access to basic services in health, education or utilities.

  2. It uses land inefficiently, leading to food shortages, because of the number of non-food producers.

  3. It creates a growing body of the dispossessed outside of the monied economy.
