Reducing discrimination against minorities
- Lessening active prejudice towards minorities
- Providing equal rights to minority groups
Description
Reducing discrimination against minorities involves implementing policies and practices that ensure equal treatment, protect rights, and promote inclusion in all sectors of society. Key actions include enforcing anti-discrimination laws, providing diversity training, supporting minority representation, and establishing accessible reporting mechanisms for grievances. These measures aim to eliminate systemic barriers, address prejudices, and foster environments where minorities can participate fully and safely, thereby remedying social, economic, and institutional inequalities.
Implementation
The European Parliament is to vote in 1997 on whether to give equal rights to women, ethnic minorities and gays employed by the EU institutions. The measures would give all couples, including those of the same sex, rights similar to those of married couples.
The Amsterdam Treaty (Article 13) has, for the first time, provided a specific power for the European Union (EU) to combat discrimination, whether on grounds of sex, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, sexual orientation.
