Redistributing environmental rights
Description
Redistributing environmental rights involves reallocating access to and control over natural resources and environmental benefits to address inequities and promote sustainability. This strategy aims to remedy imbalances where certain groups or regions disproportionately bear environmental burdens or are excluded from resource use. Practical actions include revising legal frameworks, implementing equitable resource-sharing mechanisms, and ensuring marginalized communities have a voice in environmental decision-making, thereby fostering fairer distribution and improved environmental stewardship.
Context
Often, those who have been enjoying the benefits of environmental resources are wealthier and more politically powerful. Poorer peoples can both have little say in environmental debate as well as suffer most of the effects of environmental degradation. Reducing or taking away the wealthier rights to pollute or to exploit resources can benefit such disenfranchised groups.
