Providing school-based health services

Description

Providing inexpensive and highly efficacious medications, nutritional supplements and health services to school children.

Implementation

The selection of treatments varies according to the country and wealth. The UK provides milk (for calcium) and dental services to care for children's teeth. In developing countries, treatments may be for schistosomiasis, intestinal worm infections and micronutrient deficiencies which, fully implemented, could improve the health, school attendance and learning achievement of hundreds of millions of children at a cost of US$1 to $2 per child per year. In addition, schoolchildren can be taught by their teachers about the human body and about avoiding risks to health, for example from smoking or unsafe sex.
