Providing adequate diet for perimenopause

  • Supplementing women's diet
  • Improving nutrition of older women

Description

The failure to produce oestrogen naturally, which occurs at menopause, along with insufficient intake of calcium, causes a loss of bone density. Low fat and nonfat dairy products are the best sources of calcium. One quart of skim milk a day supplies a woman's daily calcium requirement.

The lack of oestrogen also causes atherosclerosis, thickening of the waist and abdomen, and accumulation of body fat. These changes can be minimized by a diet low in fat and rich in vegetables, fruit and whole grain foods, with a moderate amount of lean protein. Regular aerobic, muscle-building and flexibility enhancing exercise are a vital addition to one's lifestyle.
