Promoting integration of migrants

In 1999, the European Union decided to do more to integrate immigrants and refugees legally resident in the EU, by offering them rights and obligations as near as possible to those enjoyed by European citizens. The European Council also undertook to combat illegal immigration at its source, by combating the traffic in human beings and strenghtening cooperation between national border police forces, particularly along the coast.
