Context

The cooperation needed to build a sustainable world order will not come about as long as some groups of people take unfair advantage of others. Inequity often leads to social strife and armed conflict. Furthermore, the people at the bottom of the pyramid of exploitation are often forced by desperation to degrade the environment around them for day to day survival. The degradation of their territories not only makes life worse for them, it undermines the global systems which provide for those at the top of the pyramid as well as for those below.

Promoting environmental equity is not optional—it is an essential strategy for a just and sustainable future. Pollution and climate risks disproportionately harm low-income communities and people of color, while benefits and protections remain unfairly distributed. Governments and institutions must prioritize these communities, enforce accountability, and guarantee equal access to clean air, safe water, and healthy neighborhoods. Environmental progress that leaves vulnerable people behind is not progress at all.

I can’t credibly claim environmental equity is unimportant. Pollution and climate harms disproportionately burden low-income communities and marginalized groups, while those with the fewest resources face the greatest risks. Ignoring these inequities makes environmental policy less effective, less fair, and less sustainable. Promoting environmental equity is not a distraction—it is essential to protecting public health, building trust, and ensuring that environmental progress benefits everyone.
