Promoting disarmament
- Promoting general disarmament
- Campaigning for disarmament
Description
Promoting disarmament involves implementing measures to reduce, control, or eliminate weapons, particularly those of mass destruction, to decrease the risk of armed conflict and enhance global security. Essential actions include negotiating and enforcing international treaties, fostering transparency and confidence-building among states, supporting verification and compliance mechanisms, and encouraging the conversion of military resources to peaceful uses. This strategy directly addresses arms proliferation, regional instability, and the humanitarian consequences of armed violence.
Implementation
The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) called for international regulations on the conventional weapons trade in 1976. Disarmament questions are regularly on the agenda of IPU Conferences, such as in April 1993, when a resolution was adopted calling for more support for a global register of arms transfers.
