  • Upholding freedom
  • Ensuring liberty
  • Assuring freedom

Description

Having personal, communal or national liberty, i.e. the capacity to choose among a diversity of options.

Claim

  1. Faced with death, one has the choice of dying with dignity. Similarly, facing life, one has the option to live fully or as a slaves to institutions and Statist regimes and in the darkness of ignorance and superstition.

  2. Freedom is the inherent rightful desire of every individual and group, to be balanced only against the common good.

Counter claim

  1. With the contemporary flood of information, perspectives and possibilities for action, degree of freedom is a function of how much one is able to be responsible for.

  2. Freedom is so diversely interpreted it is relatively meaningless.

  3. On the one hand, unlimited freedom results in the tyranny of individual whims, and on the other hand, most people want guidelines and direction i.e. constraints in order to function effectively.
