Planting productive riparian buffers

Farmers can use trees as riparian borders — forested strips along waterways that reduce agricultural runoff, increase biodiversity and act as windbreaks. Depending on the size and species mix of these buffers, additional benefits can include reduced bank erosion, improved fish habitat and wildlife corridors, and the production of salable products.
