Obscurant

An opponent of inquiry, enlightenment, and reform, one who deliberately avoids clarity or withholds explanation. The obscurant protects a social group by sheltering it from information which it would prefer to avoid or with which it has no means to cope. By so doing, the obscurant can give groups the time they need to adapt to new information without undue social stress.
