Mapping ocean resources
Description
Mapping ocean resources involves systematically identifying, cataloguing, and monitoring the distribution of marine assets such as fisheries, minerals, and energy sources. This strategy enables informed decision-making for sustainable exploitation, conservation, and conflict resolution. By providing accurate, up-to-date data, it addresses issues of overexploitation, habitat degradation, and resource disputes, supporting effective management, equitable access, and long-term preservation of oceanic wealth for current and future generations.
Implementation
The recently established Association of Caribbean States proposed activities include among others the mapping and taking an inventory of the resources of the Caribbean Sea and the seabed. In recent years, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) has funded long-term assistance in among others mapping out the Maldives' extensive maritime zone.
