Mapping ocean resources involves systematically identifying, cataloguing, and monitoring the distribution of marine assets such as fisheries, minerals, and energy sources. This strategy enables informed decision-making for sustainable exploitation, conservation, and conflict resolution over resource use. By providing accurate, up-to-date data, it addresses challenges like overfishing, habitat degradation, and resource mismanagement, supporting effective governance, equitable access, and long-term preservation of ocean ecosystems for current and future generations.
Implementation
The recently established Association of Caribbean States proposed activities include among others the mapping and taking an inventory of the resources of the Caribbean Sea and the seabed. In recent years, the Commonwealth Fund for Technical Cooperation (CFTC) has funded long-term assistance in among others mapping out the Maldives' extensive maritime zone.
