Increasing research on oceanographic analysis
- Fostering marine science
- Increasing research on marine sciences
- Undertaking competent oceanography
Description
Increasing research on oceanographic analysis involves systematically expanding scientific studies of ocean systems to better understand marine environments, climate interactions, and biodiversity. This strategy aims to generate actionable data for managing resources, mitigating pollution, predicting hazards, and addressing ecosystem degradation. By enhancing monitoring technologies, data sharing, and interdisciplinary collaboration, it provides essential knowledge to inform policy decisions, support sustainable development, and remedy gaps in understanding that hinder effective ocean stewardship.
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends strengthening existing national institutions and creating, where necessary, international analysis and prediction mechanisms in order to prepare and exchange regional and global oceanographic analyses and forecasts and to provide facilities for international research and training at national, subregional and regional levels, where applicable.
