Including sustainable development information in professional training programmes

  • Training sustainable development skills in professional programmes

Context

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends that the training and personal development components of programmes sponsored by professional bodies should ensure incorporation of skills and information on the implementation of sustainable development at all points of policy- and decision-making.

The involvement of professional institutions in sustainable development is important because of their role in continuing professional development, in setting and maintaining professional standards, and in acting as centres of excellence and probity in the community. Universities and other academic institutions can also make a valuable contribution to the process, given their involvement in education, research and other initiatives.
