Improving basic education for the poor
Description
Improving basic education for the poor involves ensuring equitable access to quality primary schooling, addressing barriers such as cost, distance, and discrimination. Key actions include providing free or subsidized education, training teachers, supplying learning materials, and creating inclusive, safe learning environments. This strategy aims to break cycles of poverty by equipping disadvantaged children with essential literacy, numeracy, and life skills, thereby enhancing future opportunities and fostering social and economic development.
Context
By giving high priority to basic education and professional training, a widening of options for resource-poor people would be achieved. The human resources would thus be available to develop adequate infrastructure, marketing systems, technology systems, credit systems etc. The above actions should be accomplished with international support, where necessary.
Implementation
This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities.
