Improving animal protection in zoos

  • Enforcing care in animal shelters
  • Regulating animal care in confinement

Implementation

It was reported in 1995 that koala cuddling in zoos was to be banned under new anti-stress regulations for the teddy bear-like marsupials in New South Wales, Australia. Koalas suffered anxiety when they were constantly taken off tree branches and placed in the arms of tourists. Zoos would be required to provide staff to ensure the animals are not harassed.
