Establishing indicators for assessing progress in combatting desertification

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends determining benchmarks and defining indicators of progress to facilitate the work of local and regional organizations in tracking progress in the fight for anti-desertification, paying particular attention to indicators of local participation.

Claim

  1. Governments at the appropriate level, with the support of relevant international and regional organizations working, should develop the technical and professional skills of people engaged in monitoring and assessing the issue of desertification and drought.
