Ensuring rapid follow-up to UNCED involves establishing effective mechanisms for monitoring, coordinating, and implementing the agreements and action plans adopted at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development. This strategy prioritizes timely reporting, resource mobilization, and stakeholder engagement to address environmental and developmental challenges. By facilitating accountability and adaptive management, it remedies delays, fragmented efforts, and lack of progress, ensuring that commitments translate into concrete, measurable outcomes for sustainable development.

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends that UNDP strengthen its own programmes in support of follow-up to UNCED without prejudice to the Fifth Programme Cycle.
