Distributing crop seeds
Description
Distributing crop seeds involves the organized provision and delivery of quality seeds to farmers and communities, aiming to enhance agricultural productivity, food security, and resilience to crop failures. This strategy addresses challenges such as poor seed access, low yields, and recovery after disasters by ensuring timely availability of appropriate seed varieties. Effective seed distribution supports sustainable farming, boosts local economies, and mitigates the impact of environmental or socio-economic disruptions on food supply.
Implementation
From March to August 1993, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies distributed 1,118 tonnes of seeds to parts of Ethiopia. In the same year the Federation purchased 60 tonnes of bean seeds and 410 tonnes of wheat seeds for 10,000 to 15,000 families in Lesotho affected by drought, seeds for 500 households in Swaziland, seed distribution in Zimbabwe.
