Creating high-level advisory board of eminent persons knowledgeable about environment and development

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. One outcome of UNCED was the suggestion that intergovernmental bodies, the Secretary-General and the UN system as a whole might benefit from the expertise of a high-level advisory board consisting of eminent persons knowledgeable about environment and development, including relevant sciences, appointed by the Secretary-General in their personal capacity. The Secretary-General would make appropriate recommendations in this regard to the 47th session of the General Assembly.

Claim

  1. An Eminent Persons Advisory Group should be established with trade, environment and development expertise to advise the WTO Director General on how to promote sustainable development by maximizing the synergies between trade, environment and development, and by developing principles to resolve conflicts where they arise.
