Coordinating international sustainable development activities at field level

Implementation

This strategy features in the framework of Agenda 21 as formulated at UNCED (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), now coordinated by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and implemented through national and local authorities. Agenda 21 recommends that UNDP foster the UN system's collective thrust in support of the implementation of Agenda 21, at the country, regional, interregional and global levels, through its network of field offices. It would draw on the expertise of the specialized agencies and other UN organizations and bodies involved in operational activities. The role of the Resident Representative/Resident Coordinator of UNDP needs to be strengthened in order to coordinate UN operational activities at the field level.
