Cleaning up marine pollution
Description
Cleaning up marine pollution involves systematically removing contaminants such as plastics, chemicals, and oil from oceans, seas, and coastal areas. This strategy employs technologies like skimmers, booms, and filtration systems, as well as organized manual cleanups, to directly reduce pollution levels. Its primary purpose is to restore marine ecosystems, protect wildlife, and safeguard human health by mitigating the immediate and long-term impacts of hazardous waste and debris in marine environments.
Implementation
UNEP has led a major effort to clean up the Mediterranean Sea. It encouraged adversaries such as Syria and Israel, and Turkey and Greece to work together to clean up beaches. As a result, more than 50% of the previously polluted beaches are now usable.
