Campaigning against the export of toxic materials
- Protesting export of hazardous wastes
Description
Campaigning against the export of toxic materials involves coordinated advocacy, public awareness, and policy engagement to prevent the transfer of hazardous substances—such as industrial waste, chemicals, and e-waste—from one country to another, particularly from developed to developing nations. The strategy aims to protect human health and the environment by promoting stricter regulations, transparency, and enforcement, while supporting safer waste management practices and international agreements that restrict or ban the cross-border movement of toxic materials.
Implementation
In 1991 the government of El Salvador was approached with an offer to build a City of Goodwill along the Pacific coast. The construction materials were to be 3 million tonnes of ash from USA power plants, reputedly toxic. In 1993, following local and international campaigning, the government refused to accept the offer.
