Breeding in captivity
- Captive breeding
Description
Breeding in captivity involves the deliberate propagation of animal or plant species within controlled environments such as zoos, aquariums, or botanical gardens. This strategy aims to prevent extinction, restore depleted populations, and maintain genetic diversity. By managing reproduction and care, it addresses threats from habitat loss, poaching, and environmental changes, enabling reintroduction into the wild and supporting conservation research, education, and sustainable population management for endangered or vulnerable species.
Counter-claim
Larger questions of possible repatriation of captive bred progeny may not be answerable until such time as the moral, ethical and technological issues confronting the environment and the turtles themselves are solved. This may in effect become a multi generation exercise. Captive reproduction programmes can therefore be rationalized as caretakers until such time in the future when these larger issues are resolved.
