Bearing children out of wedlock
- Having children outside marriage
Description
Bearing children out of wedlock involves supporting and enabling individuals to have and raise children outside formal marriage. This strategy addresses issues such as social stigma, legal discrimination, and lack of access to resources by advocating for equal rights, social acceptance, and supportive services for unmarried parents and their children. Practical actions include policy reform, public awareness campaigns, and provision of healthcare, education, and financial assistance to ensure well-being and reduce marginalization.
Implementation
The number of births out of wedlock in the USA and in western Europe also increased, from 7.8% to 44.7% in Denmark and from 5.2% to 25.1% in the UK between 1960 and 1988. This, however, is interpreted differently in the light of family models. While in Scandinavian countries it should be seen as a result of cohabitation, in the USA and the UK it reflects rather teenage pregnancies, uncommon in Scandinavian countries.
