Description

Advancing building technology involves the systematic development and application of innovative materials, construction methods, and design solutions to improve building performance, safety, and sustainability. This strategy addresses challenges such as resource inefficiency, high costs, and environmental impact by promoting energy-efficient systems, modular construction, and smart technologies. Its practical intent is to create resilient, adaptable structures that meet evolving societal needs while reducing waste, lowering emissions, and enhancing occupant well-being.

Context

Architectural engineering is the application of engineering principles to the design, construction, and operation of technical systems for buildings. It comprises: (1) Lighting and electrical systems; (2) Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC); (3) Structural systems for buildings; (4) Architectural acoustics and noise control; (5) Construction management/Construction engineering; (6) Plumbing; and (7) Fire Protection.

Implementation

UNDP has a project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal through energy-efficient building technology. In collaboration with multilateral and bilateral agencies, banks and host country public and private institutions, the project team is to inform and educate organizations in these two countries on how to invest in energy efficiency measures in the building sector, using technical and economic methods. As a result of pilot projects, the organizations will become aware of the the environmental benefits and economic advantages of applying energy efficiency principles to existing buildings and the design of new ones.
