Thwarted cooperative success

  • Unexplored cooperative potential
  • Unrecognized benefits from cooperatives
  • Unestablished cooperative union

Incidence

In most of the Western countries the once powerful consumers' cooperative movement is in serious decline. Cooperatives have fulfilled their social purpose since today consumer interests are well protected by legal standards and regulations, and their ideals are forgotten since members have simply become shoppers. The decline was inevitable, because the committee system of management did not adjust to the revolution of retailing.
