Threatened species of Gyps fulvus

Griffon vultures are being reintroduced to Romania’s Carpathian Mountains after a century-long absence.  These scavengers, alongside proposed reintroductions of bison and beavers, are expected to serve as keystone species by managing carcasses, curbing disease spread and recycling nutrients. The effort builds on successes in neighboring Bulgaria and bolsters a proposed 2,000-square-kilometer national park, home to Europe’s largest populations of lynx, wolves and bears. Local communities have voiced concerns about potential economic impacts on industries such as logging.
