Suttee

Tradition demands that the widow of a Hindu be cremated with him, even though she is still alive. The practice is called 'suttee'.

In 1987, an 18 year old city educated woman was burned to death on her husband's funeral pyre in front of her parents and several thousand people. The police did nothing to prevent the crime.
