Under the guise of international socialist cooperation some states dominated others militarily. Through their military capabilities they were enabled to dictate favourable economic treaties or agreements and eventually culturally dominate what was then a neo-colonized nation or region. One very evident form of this was the imposition of the dominating country's language.

Incidence

Both the former National Socialist government of Germany and the government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) colonized adjoining nations and regions. The former Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the former sovereign nations of Georgia and Armenia were losing their ethnic and linguistic identity prior to the breakdown of the former Soviet Union. Attempts were also made to colonize Afghanistan. In the Caribbean, socialist colonization is extending from Cuba, and in North Africa from Libya.

Claim

Socialist colonialism is a deeply troubling and urgent issue that demands immediate attention. Under the guise of equality and progress, powerful socialist states have imposed their ideologies and control over weaker nations, erasing local cultures and exploiting resources. This form of domination is just as oppressive as traditional colonialism, undermining sovereignty and self-determination. Ignoring socialist colonialism perpetuates injustice and hinders genuine global liberation—addressing it is absolutely essential for a just world.

Counter-claim

The notion of "socialist colonialism" is not an important problem at all. It is largely a theoretical construct with little real-world relevance compared to the pressing issues of traditional colonialism and capitalist exploitation. Focusing on this distracts from genuine injustices and historical realities. There is scant evidence that so-called socialist colonialism has had significant global impact, making it a minor concern unworthy of serious attention in contemporary discourse.
