Return of purchases

  • Purchase returns
  • Refund of consumer products

Nature

Buying a product and returning for refund within a few days or alternatively the store's of manufacturer's guaranteed refund period. This may be premeditated or arising from a change of mind.

Incidence

Some electronics manufacturers in the USA claim that only 15 percent of products returned are actually defective. They identify phenomena such as the "Super Bowl Problem" (when a large-screen TV is purchased on Friday and returned on Monday after the game) and the "Wedding Problem" (same thing for a video camera). It is claimed that such practices are lowering manufacturers earnings by about 25 percent and are attributed to limitless return policies at superstores that now dominate electronics retailing in the USA.
