Radioactive contamination of soil

In the former Soviet Union, dozens of ad hoc nuclear waste dumps and stockpiles are dotted throughout the country. These sites are barely marked, much less monitored. The extent of radioactive contamination of soils at these and nuclear testing sites can only be guessed.
