The threat of physical force to exploit others may be in the form of: police brutality; demonstrations; thuggery and juvenile delinquence; 'protection' tactics used by organized crime; terrorism and guerrilla tactics; various kinds of torture; or the maintenance of a large standing army, police corps or other group based on the use of force. Physical intimidation may be used in a variety of situations for a wide variety of reasons.

Background

Physical intimidation has been recognized as a pervasive social problem since the early 20th century, when labor movements and civil rights campaigns highlighted its use to suppress dissent and control vulnerable groups. International attention intensified in the late 20th century as human rights organizations documented widespread incidents in workplaces, schools, and public spaces. Growing global awareness has led to increased research and policy initiatives addressing the psychological and societal impacts of physical intimidation.

Incidence

During the late 1980s and early 1990s there were numerous reports of Israeli army intimidation of Palestinians living in the occupied West Bank. The incidents occasionally suggested the intention to cause grievous harm or death, and it is alleged that many were motivated by deep personal hatred and division among village families.

Claim

Physical intimidation is a deeply troubling and pervasive problem that undermines individual safety, dignity, and freedom. It creates a climate of fear, silences voices, and perpetuates cycles of abuse and inequality. No one should ever feel threatened or coerced by another’s physical presence or actions.
