Nature

Myotonic dystrophy (DM) can begin anytime from childhood to middle age. The symptoms are generalized weakness and muscle wasting first affecting the face, feet, hands and neck. Specifically there is a delayed relaxation of muscles after contraction. The congenital myotonic form of the disease is more severe. Progression is slow, sometimes spanning 50 to 60 years.
