Manipulation
- Dependence on manipulation
- Manipulative people
Nature
Dominating another person so that they act according to one's will. Manipulation implies that devious means are used and that the manipulated may well be acting against their own self-interest.
Background
The global significance of manipulation emerged prominently in the 20th century, as mass media, propaganda, and psychological research revealed the extent to which individuals and societies could be influenced without their awareness. Landmark events, such as wartime disinformation campaigns and the rise of advertising, prompted international concern and scholarly inquiry. Over time, digital technologies and social networks have intensified scrutiny, highlighting manipulation’s pervasive role in shaping public opinion, consumer behavior, and even democratic processes worldwide.
Incidence
Manipulation occurs on a global scale, affecting individuals, organizations, and entire societies through deceptive tactics in politics, media, business, and interpersonal relationships. The proliferation of digital technologies and social media platforms has amplified the reach and impact of manipulative practices, enabling the rapid spread of misinformation, psychological influence, and exploitation. This widespread phenomenon undermines trust, distorts decision-making, and contributes to social and economic instability worldwide.
In 2022, widespread manipulation was documented during the Brazilian presidential election, where coordinated disinformation campaigns on social media platforms sought to influence voter perceptions and outcomes. Investigations revealed the use of automated bots and misleading content to sway public opinion.

Claim
A world of unseen dictatorship is conceivable, still using the forms of democratic government. (Kenneth Boulding)
Counter-claim
Frankly, the concern over manipulation is vastly overblown. People have always influenced each other—it's a natural part of human interaction. Worrying about manipulation distracts us from real issues and undermines personal responsibility. If someone is easily swayed, that's their own failing, not a societal crisis. We should focus on empowering individuals to think critically, rather than obsessing over every perceived attempt at persuasion. Manipulation simply isn't the pressing problem people make it out to be.
