Tens of millions of plants are killed by and for human beings every year. They are dug up, cut down, burned, poisoned, mutilated, starved and deprived of water and sunlight for the sole purpose of benefiting humankind. While this may be necessary for the continuance of the species, it is done without regard for the plants, without conscience and without consciousness.

Background

To anyone who believes that life itself has some purpose, or is even its own reason for being, the wanton destruction of plants is inappropriate. The destruction of any life is not to be taken lightly, or presumed to be isolated in the scheme of things. It requires careful consideration of the responsibilities and alternatives. Some vegetarians therefore prefer to eat fruits and vegetables only at the peak of ripeness, when a cycle of the plant's life has been completed.

Incidence

The killing of plants occurs on a vast scale globally, affecting natural ecosystems, agricultural lands, and urban environments. Incidents range from deliberate deforestation and illegal logging to the widespread use of herbicides and the introduction of invasive species, resulting in significant loss of plant biodiversity and ecosystem services. This problem is exacerbated by industrial expansion and unsustainable land management practices, with consequences for food security and climate regulation.
In 2022, the Amazon rainforest in Brazil experienced a surge in illegal land clearing, with over 13,000 square kilometers of forest—home to countless plant species—destroyed, according to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE).

The killing of plants is a critical and urgent problem that threatens the very foundation of life on Earth. Plants provide us with oxygen, food, medicine, and shelter, yet we recklessly destroy them through deforestation, pollution, and urbanization. This devastation accelerates climate change, endangers countless species, and undermines our own survival. Ignoring the mass killing of plants is not just irresponsible—it is a direct attack on our planet’s future and our well-being.

It is a fact of life that humanity's present state of evolution calls for the eating of plants, whether directly or indirectly, in order to ensure survival. Until nutrition can be converted directly from sunlight, it will have to be taken from the plant kingdom in order to do the least amount of harm to sentient beings.
